Tuesday RCA recording artist Gavin Degraw & David Cook brought their co headlining tour to an Estrogen filled Verizon Theatre. The venue which has a capacity for around Six Thousand, was scaled down to about a half house, still making it one of the biggest venues the pair would play on the tour.
I’m no stranger to either artist having seen them each separately a couple times in smaller venues like Palladium Ballroom or House of Blues. It struck me as odd that they didn’t book one of those venues actually. What struck me as even more odd was the low production value on this tour. Just a few overhead, side, and back lights were what lit the stage and performers as they played their roughly hour long sets. Both guys are known to use spotlighters at venues like this because they are both pretty high energy, Degraw especially likes to move around and dance during his set.
When I first heard about this tour I thought it would be like my dream tour. Two musicians that I really enjoy on tour together. But at the end of the show I felt like it was just one big tease and I was left unsatisfied wanting more. Not because I didn’t like the performances, but because the time they had was just so limited and rushed. Neither artist really had much time to talk or play with the audience. They tried, lord knows they tried to banter and tell stories. But in the end the intimacy was sacrificed for more songs. The two fan bases were incredibly respectful of each other though, which isn’t always the case with dual headliners. Hopefully Gavin & David are able to use this platform to gain some new fans. Even David joked early in his set that he could tell who the hardcore Gavin fans were cause they would just stand their with their arms crossed the whole time during his set. Hopefully some of them were won over with his witty jokes and skillful guitar playing.
Now I will just have to wait for Gavin to come back to get to hear all the songs I wanted too, even though I was thrilled to hear some of my new favorites like Run Every Time & Soldier. What does a girl have to do to hear “Meaning” though, I guess I will have to settle for Chemical Party for now. Majority of both musicians sets were songs off their latest releases. David has less material so it didn’t feel like his set was missing as much content and was happy to hear some old material like Barbasol mixed with new songs like Rapid Eye Movement.
Both these guys are more than worth your time, I would just suggest checking them out separately. It’s nice only having to buy one ticket to see two great musicians, it’s just not the show you would get from seeing each artist on their own. The only way to make a show like this work, is to make sure it starts early enough that each act gets enough time to do their thing. That just wasn’t the case.
