Early Sunday evening former American Idol Contestant, Kellie Pickler, took the stage at the State Fair of Texas. I’m not going to lie, her only material I’m familiar with, is that which is on the radio. But I will say she kept the set list pretty upbeat, which generally is a good idea with a country crowd. They don’t like to be lulled to sleep, but they do appreciate a good ballad here and there.

Pickler was all smiles and couldn't stop waving to the young girls in the crowd, and there were quite a few of them, adorning their home made T-shirts and signs. Well I stood and watched and waited, and it didn’t take long until between songs she said something you couldn’t help but laugh and shake your head at. “Sometimes when I pick up my water bottle and have my microphone in the other hand... I forget which is which and try to talk into the water bottle.” You never know what she might say and I wont deny, I love when Jay Leno sends her out as a correspondent, its hilarious. Go youtube it! She also stated that everything ends up on Myspace or Youtube. But hey she’s right.

After doing a cover of 9 to 5 by her “idol” Dolly Parton, came the highlight of the show which had to be the song “I Wonder.” The crowd ate it up and I wouldn’t be surprised if there were more than a few folks with less than dry eyes. Her Encore was of course her first single and most well known song “Red High Heels.” But afterwards she did something that was surprising and highly entertaining to watch. She signed T-shirts, cd’s, and even shoes thrown up onto the stage to her for a good 10 or 15 minutes after the song was over. It’s always good to see that an artist knows their fans are who make them, and they dont take that for granted. My only real criticism was the short set list, especially with 2 albums of material to pluck from. But Kellie Pickler gets a big kudos from me along with a stamp of approval.
