Review Friday was opening day of the State Fair of Texas. Which means a few things actually, Big Tex, Corn Dogs (and anything else fried you can think of), The Midway, and of course the Free Concerts at the Chevy Main Stage on the weekends. Tonight’s concert and fair openers were up and coming country group Lady Antebellum.

The band hit the stage right on time opening up with a few of their more up beat numbers, going for crowd interaction pretty early on with the clapping and singing along. Even trying to get the folks who didn’t know their songs to sing along by mixing in some Tom Petty and AC DC into their songs. I have to admit it meshed pretty well and was a fun addition.

When the band slowed it down unfortunately it was a big chunk of the set before they picked it back up again. It may have gone over a little better with the audience if they had spread out their slower numbers a bit. The slower portion of the set did give the opportunity to see the intensity Charles and Hilary put into a number called All We’d Ever Need, and also made room for a nice improvisation where the band sat down on the edge of the stage for “One Day You Will” mentioning that they should start doing that for every show as they got back up.

Hilary and Charles who shared vocal duties during most of the set were spot on and sounded much better than I had seen on various tv appearances, while the third member of the group Dave showed off on guitar. The band had a really great chemistry on stage, each member being able to hold their own, but also be part of the group. I can only imagine this band continuing to grow musically and in popularity. I’m sure as they record more material, their set list will also grow stronger. All I can say is watch out Sugarland.

                                                                                                                    -Rachel Parker Reviews Archive: 2008 2007 2006 2009 2010
